The Global Partnership for Ethiopia (GPE) has chosen Mr. Anwar Soussa as the Managing Director (MD) of the Ethiopian Operating Company, beginning July 1, 2021. He will report to the Ethiopia entity’s Board of Directors as well as the CEO of Safaricom PLC.

Anwar is the Managing Director of Vodacom DRC and the Chairperson of Vodacash (M-PESA), positions he has held since 2017.

He has established Vodacom DRC as the largest Vodacom operation outside of South Africa by delivering significant improvements in operational performance, surpassing the $500 million USD in service revenue milestone for the first time in 2020.

On behalf of the Global Partnership for Ethiopia Consortium, Anwar will lead the Ethiopian Operating Company. He will be in charge of carrying out the consortium’s aim of achieving the transformative economic and social effects in Ethiopia and favorably impacting the lives of its 112 million people.

He will develop strategies and plans to assure the delivery of high-quality, low-cost mobile and internet connections, allowing millions of more Ethiopians to get access to quality telecom services. Anwar was the Chief Executive Officer of Airtel in Uganda and Chad before joining Vodacom. He has also held top executive positions with MTN and Digicel, among other telecoms.

 

Anwar is a Greek citizen who graduated from the American College of Greece (Deree) with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and a master’s degree in Marketing from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada.
